Poker Cash Games Strategy

Traditional poker cash games where you sit on the table with your real money and not chips are one of the most popular formats online. They are simple, as you know what you win or lose at any given moment. On top of that, there’s no limit on the money you can win from bad players. This is why many professionals focus mainly on cash games.

If you want to try your luck as well, there are certain things you need to know. Some are related to your Poker Cash Games Strategy in terms of the game, others are more about mentality and attitude. Both are crucial if you are to become a successful poker cash games player.

The Long-Term Is Everything

Honestly, we couldn’t stress this enough no matter how hard we try. You should always make the best long-term decisions and not think too much about the consequences. Math is a serious thing and if you constantly play with a positive expected value, you will be a winner in the long run. And that’s exactly where you want to be.

Milk The Bad Players

In the movies, books and pop culture, in general, the best poker players are usually playing against each other and trying to outsmart themselves. While this could happen every now and then, the truth is that you will make the most money from people who are simply bad at poker. They will make stupid decisions and you will capitalize. This is why you should ditch the illusion that you will be playing cat and mouse with some great poker players. It has some value in the long run, as you could become a better player, but you should always try to play against the worst possible opponents.

Keep It Simple

This one is targeted at beginners mostly. If you’re rather new at the game, you should stick to ABC poker. Pick good preflop hands, don’t bluff too often, don’t try to bluffcatch too often. Recognize the donks on the table, hit a good hand and get their money. Start from there and when you get more experience, you could try new stuff and see what works.

Steal The Blinds

After getting the general stuff out of the way, it’s time to go through some practical tips. One of them would be to steal the blinds as often as you can. When you’re in a late position such as the button or the cut off and everybody folded, you are in an exceptional spot. The cards doen’t even matter most of the time, as you will easily take the blinds with a simple raise of 2.5-3 times the big blind. Of course, you should follow the table dynamics and don’t go too far. If you find the right balance, you will be able to steal the blinds often without testing the patience of your opponents to a point when they will start defending them fiercely.

Play Aggressively

If you’re going to get involved in a hand, try to be the player that has the initiative. Most of the time, all people involved won’t have a much of a hand and the one pushing will win the pot. Actually, you will be surprised how often does that happen, even at the low limit cash games.

Use Similar Bet Sizes

If you use a specific bet size when you have a strong hand and a different one when you’re bluffing, chances are someone will notice and punish you. This is why you should stick to similar sizes of your bets. Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t vary. However, even when you do it, try to use the new sizing in different spots and not just in a particular one.

And another quick note – there are some huge exceptions to this rule, so try to follow the table. If a player is on tilt and is probably leaning to a stupid call that doesn’t depend on the size of the bet, go bigger than usually. The logic is similar for players who are more than willing to fold. If you believe they are going to release their hand against a bet of 1/3 the pot, there’s no need to put more in the middle of the table.

Semi-Bluffing Is One Of Your Best Friends

There’s a lot of noise about bluffing, but a lot of people leave semi-bluffing out of the equation. But what does this mean exactly? Simply put, you have a hand with potential such as flush draw or straight draw, but haven’t hit it yet. Despite that, you play aggressively. As a result, you could end up winning the pot in the two different ways. By either forcing your opponent to fold or hitting your hand later on. It’s a powerful weapon, especially against a small number of opponents. We don’t recommend you to use it against more than 2 players.

Don’t Throw Good Money After Bad

This one often helps tiny mistakes grow into fatal errors. Let’s say you made a stupid call or a raise for some reason. It might be a misclick or something else, it happens every now and then. Most people feel obliged to chase the hand for some reason and end up losing even more money. Of course, you should try to make the best of the situation, but unless you hit something big or have very good reasons to believe your opponent is weak, the best usually means folding. Don’t fall in this trap, those 2-3 big blinds you already lost doesn’t necessarily have to bring your whole stack down.

Conclusion

Obviously, nothing is written in stone when it comes to poker, but these tips should give you a good starting point. Try to follow them until you have enough experience and knowledge to build your own strategy. And don’t forget to keep learning all the time, as this is by far the most important thing in the game of poker, especially on the cash tables.
